Breaking News: Block Protocol Launches to End Proprietary Web Block Lock-In
In a move that could reshape how we build and share content online, a group of developers today released an early draft of the Block Protocol — an open, royalty-free standard designed to make web blocks interchangeable across any editor or platform.
"For too long, every app has had to reinvent the wheel for blocks," said lead developer Alex Chen. "Users are stuck with whatever blocks their particular tool offers. We're fixing that."
The protocol defines a common interface that any block — from a simple paragraph to a complex Kanban board — can follow. Any application that adopts the protocol can instantly embed any compliant block, regardless of where it was created.

Web editors based on the block concept have exploded in popularity over the past few years. WordPress, Notion, Medium, and dozens of other tools all offer block-based editing with a familiar "+" or "/" key to insert new content pieces.
Yet beneath that surface similarity lies deep fragmentation. Each platform implements blocks from scratch, with proprietary APIs and data formats. A calendar block built for one editor cannot be used in another without costly rewriting.
"Developers spend thousands of hours re-implementing the same blocks over and over," explained Chen. "And end-users suffer because they can only use the blocks their editor team had time to build."
This siloed approach limits innovation. Users who discover a powerful block in another tool — a task tracker, a chart component, a custom checkout form — have no way to bring it into their own editor.
What This Means: A New Era of Block Portability
The Block Protocol promises to break those walls. By establishing a lightweight, open contract between block host applications and block providers, the protocol makes blocks first-class citizens of the web.
Any editor that implements the hosting side of the protocol — be it a blogging tool, a note-taking app, a CMS, or a dashboard builder — will be able to load any block that conforms to the specification.
"Write a block once, deploy it anywhere," said Mbeki. "That's the dream we're making real."
For users, this means unprecedented choice and flexibility. Instead of being confined to a limited palette of built-in blocks, they can browse a growing library of community-contributed blocks and insert them directly into their documents.
Developers, meanwhile, benefit from reduced duplication. Instead of building every block from scratch, they can focus on integrating a generic block host and then rely on the ecosystem for specialized block types.
Early Implementation and Community Drive
The team has already built simple demonstration blocks — including a paragraph, list, and table block — along with a minimal host editor. All code is open source under a permissive license.
"We want this to be a community effort," Chen said. "Our goal is a massive open source library of amazing blocks, from charts to calendars to order forms, all interoperable."
Blocks can represent anything that makes sense in a document: text, images, videos, forms, Kanban boards, structured data displays. The protocol is extensible and does not restrict what a block can do.

The early draft is available for review and comment. The team is actively seeking feedback from editor developers, block creators, and end users.
"If you work on any kind of editor — blogging, note-taking, CMS, anything — please consider adding Block Protocol support," urged Chen. "Write the hosting code once, and immediately give your users access to thousands of potential block types."
The protocol is 100% free, open, and non-proprietary. No licensing fees. No vendor lock-in.
