The rapid pace of technological change is outpacing traditional education, creating a widening gap between emerging technologies and job-ready skills. To address this, Microsoft and Coursera have expanded their partnership with the release of 11 new Professional Certificates spanning artificial intelligence, data, and software development. These programs build on a portfolio that has already attracted over 1.3 million enrollments globally, offering structured pathways for learners to gain practical, in-demand skills.
“We’re moving into a world where every role is shaped by AI, data, and cloud technologies,” said Elisa Graceffo, General Manager, Global Skilling, at Microsoft. “These certificates are designed to help learners understand new tools, confidently apply them in their daily work, and stay ahead in today’s rapidly changing job market.”
The new certificates expand Microsoft’s Professional Certificate catalog on Coursera by more than 50%, providing accessible routes from foundational knowledge to applied expertise in fields like generative AI, modern data systems, and software engineering.
Rising Demand for AI, Data, and Development Skills
Enrollments in generative AI content on Coursera have surged 234% year over year, according to the platform’s Job Skills Report 2026, while Professional Certificate enrollments are up 91%. This growth reflects a shift from seeking knowledge to seeking verified, job-ready capability. Microsoft’s latest certificates emphasize hands-on practice with real-world tools to translate learning directly into career opportunities.
What’s New: Pathways Across Three Critical Domains
The 11 certificates are organized into three areas where demand continues to outpace supply. Below are the offerings in AI and software development (data certificates are also part of the launch but were not detailed in the announcement).
